How to Make the Most of Your College or University Experience

Whether you are entering college or university straight from high school, or you have decided to make a career change and head back to school, making the most of your post-secondary school experience is top of the list of priorities. Your school is a big investment in time and money so it’s important you get the most possible out of it.

So how can you make this happen, how can you ensure that every moment you spend in college or university helps to shape your future self and your career path? Here are some tips you can use.

Immerse Yourself Fully in the Experience

One of the best ways to get the most out of your college or university experience is to immerse yourself fully in the experience. What this means is living on-campus in student residence. You will instantly be part of a community where you can meet new people who share similar ideas and interests as you. Not only that, you’ll have access to all the services and activities offered through the school.

The York University residence building in Toronto, called the Quad, is an excellent example of how you can instantly be part of that student community.

Consider Using or Becoming a Tutor

Because there are bound to be a few courses that are tougher for you to grasp than others, it’s a good idea to learn about the tutoring that is available on-campus. These tutors can look over your work, check for spelling and grammar, give you input on the flow of your essay, etc. In turn you’ll most likely see your grades improve, which will only help you down the road.

On the flip side, if there is a subject area you do especially well in, you may want to consider being a tutor yourself. Tutoring looks incredible on a resume and can help you get your foot in the door at that dream job.

Be Aware of Guest Seminars and Guest Speakers Taking Place On-Campus

University and college campuses often host seminars, lectures, and guest speakers throughout the year. This can be a great opportunity for you to learn new skills, information, and even do a little networking. Typically this information can be found on the school’s calendar of events on their website. Because it is meant for students the events are usually free or a small cost.

Step Outside the Box

While there are plenty of classes you will need to take that directly relate to your major, there are also classes that you can sign up for that have nothing to do with what you’re studying. Before you write these off as “useless”, you may want to give them a try. At the very least it can help open your eyes to other experiences and content.

Getting a Complete Experience

By using these tips you will help to ensure that you get a complete and meaningful experience in college or university, which will leave you better prepared for your future.
